What is a filter and why do I need one?

You need a filter if you’re using a broadband modem on a telephone line that is shared with ordinary phones. This also applies to equipment such as faxes, sky boxes and any other devices plugged in that are used on the same telephone line. It makes sure that the broadband signals don’t interfere with the voice signals, allowing you to talk on the phone and surf the Internet at the same time. One filter is included in your welcome pack.

DSL puts noise on your phone line. To prevent the noise, a filter is needed on each phone jack for any device other than your DSL modem. Example: phones, fax machines, satellite receivers, caller ID boxes, answering machines, alarm systems, etc. The lack of a filter on your phone or fax machine can cause problems with your DSL connection.
