How is DOI used in web applications?
The DOI System is as independent as possible from specific technology implementations. For web applications, the DOI name may be expressed as a HTTP URI. The method for doing so is simply to prepend the DOI with http://dx.doi.org/ and (where necessary) use the hexadecimal (%) encoding required for URLs or URNs.
