He included many different powerful breeds with the intent to create a mastiff type dog very capable as a hunter of large game and as a guard dog. The Dogo Argentino or Argentinean Mastiff fits this description very well. It is a lithe, muscular and intelligent breed of dog that excels at hunting, tracking, watch-dogging, guarding, police work, narcotics detection and military functions. It is a real shame that this breed is also prized for its ability as a pit fighter, something which is still legal in many of the South American countries. For that reason this breed has developed a bad reputation as a vicious and dangerous animal, making it illegal to own in some countries.
