After all, who could really begrude children the chance to explore a museum and possibly discover a fascination with the past. But Diane Lees, the head of Britain’s Imperial War Museum, has raised the issue. In an address to the Museums Association, Lees reportedly spoke at length about the challenges faced by most museums in a post-credit crunch world. It’s a fertile area for a talk, as museums are suffering, but the emphasis has been placed on one section of her speech where she appears to criticise the presence of school trips: “Given that most museums are already reporting that they are at capacity for schools and are finding it difficult to balance the experience of non-school visitors against a tide of children with worksheets, we have a problem…This is perhaps where the first of our revolutions needs to happen.
