The salary cap is a limit on the amount of money each club is allowed to pay out to their players each year. Each club receives revenue from sponsorships, gate takings and merchandise sales. Regardless of the amount of money each club has coming in and regardless of their financial wealth, in 2010 they are only allowed to spend a maximum of $4.1m on their top 25 players. The salary cap is in place to ensure an even competition. Without it the richest clubs would buy the best players and it would be the richest clubs winning the competition every year. Poorer clubs simply would not be able to match the offers to players that the richer clubs can put forward. There are many sports without salary caps and with these sports it is generally the same few clubs at the top of the competition each and every year which makes for a very boring game.
