The purpose was to murder Jews. They also murdered lots of other folks, but the prime target from the get-go was Jews. Camps such as Treblinka, Belzec and Sobibor were not concentration camps; they were extermination camps. Auschwitz was a complex of camps; certainly the Birkenau camp could be described as an extermination camp.
