How long should speeches be?
The state does not set minimum or maximum amounts of time for speeches. Districts may, taking into consideration what is appropriate at each age level. Length is not the primary factor in determining whether a speech scores a 4 or above on the official speaking scoring guide. However, unusually brief speeches most likely will not meet the standards in ideas and content and organization. If a speech receives a 4 on the official scoring guide but falls below a suggested minimum length, it should not be disqualified. Although districts set requirements, if any, regarding length, here are some guidelines.
