What is thrush infection of mouth?
Oral thrush is a yeast infection of the mucus membrane lining the mouth and tongue. It is a condition that occurs when the fungus Candida accumulates on that lining.CauseA small amount of Candida lives in the mouth most of the time. When the immune system is weakened, the fungus grows and sores or lesions form on the mouth and tongue. The lesions can be painful and may bleed.SymptomsOral thrush can spread to the roof of the mouth, gums, tonsils or the back of the throat. The lesions are creamy white and velevety.Contributing FactorsA weakened immune system allows Candida to flourish. Taking steroids, having AIDS or an HIV infection, being elderly or in poor health, or undergoing chemotherapy can increase the chances of getting thrush.
