Glenview firefighters on the roof of Matty’s Wayside Inn try to cut a hole in the roof to expose the fire at the restaurant in Glenview at 8 a.m. The Glenview fire department got the first call at 3:34 a.m. and Waukegan Road was still closed at 9:30 a.m. Fire officials are combing through the wreckage following a two-alarm fire at Matty’s Wayside Inn in Glenview early this morning. Lt. Joe Faehndrick of the Glenview Fire Department said a neighbor of the establishment called the fire department at 3:45 a.m. to say he saw smoke coming from the popular restaurant on the 1700 block of Waukegan Road. Upon arrival, the restaurant was engulfed in flames, Faehndrick said, and a second alarm was called that brought additional units from surrounding departments. “It became a surround-and-drown type of situation where the fire was so heavy and thick that we couldn’t attack it inside,” he said. “The fire kept rearing up because of the heavy timbers used to build the restaurant many years ago.” He
