Will Vinegar Cure Onychomycosis?
The active ingredient in vinegar that fights the fungi that causes onychomycosis is called acetic acid. Vinegar is made up of five percent of it. Acetic acid does have an effect on the various fungi that infect the toenails or fingernails. However, treating nail fungus is very difficult and requires consistent strength, and enough of it to cure it permanently. The fungus is protected by the nail because it settles into the nail bed. Getting vinegar, or any other topical treatment to soak in is not easy to do. Also, the protein called keratin that actually makes the nail is a food source for the fungi. Killing it requires more strength than acetic acid. Usually, treating an infected toenail with vinegar will result in some immediate results. You could see visible evidence that the infection is lessening and the nail itself will probably start to look better too. However, it will not last. There is not enough strength to kill it permanently. Much like a bacterial infection that will star
