Victor Gruen was an Austrian-born architect who invented the shopping mall in America in the 1950s. Incidentally he disavowed the consumer manipulation that took his name, believing that shopping centres shouldn’t employ these tools that ultimately tried to confuse the shopper to buy things they didn’t need. They named it after him anyway.
