A snaffle bit is one that works only by pressure on the bars of the horse’s mouth, not by leverage on the horse’s poll and chin through the use of a chin strap (which is a chain or leather strap that fastens under the horse’s jaw). If not turned in the correct direction in the horse’s mouth, it could damage the bars and roof of the mouth and will cause the horse to toss his head or ignore the rein aids.
