Who Was Ebenezer Scrooge?
Ebenezer Scrooge is the name of a fictional character, the protagonist in Charles Dickens’ novel The Christmas Carol published for the first time in 1843. In the novel Ebenezer Scrooge is portrayed as a rich but stingy businessman who especially dislikes festivities of all kinds. Scrooge’ dealings with the poor are harsh and whom he particularly despises; he is also shown to be hard on his clerk Bob Cratchit. In the novel Scrooge is visited on Christmas Eve by the spirit of his former business partner Jacob Marley who has been condemned to eternal punishment for his exploitation of the poor when in life; he warns Scrooge of a similar fate unless he mend his ways. During the night Scrooge is visited by three ghosts of the Christmas Past, Present and Future who show Scrooge why he is the way he is the effect it has on others and the results of his actions in the future.
