How Should Kilts Be Worn?
The kilt was traditionally worn by Scottish noblemen as their dress attire. In more modern times, the garment has become the symbol of Scots of all descents and as the dress attire for the British Royal Guard. Present-day “Highland Games,” or reenactments of ancient Scottish games of strength, often find their competitors wearing kilts for competition. Proper wear of the garment depends on the formality of the occasion. Put on the kilt with fringed edges at your right side. The pleats should be in the back. Your kilt should be worn to your waist and at or just below the knee. Wear a pressed white shirt tucked into your kilt. A fold-down collar is preferable in modern dress. Pull cream, white or coordinating stocking to just below the knee. Colored stockings should match one of the colors in the plaid of the kilt. Place the kilt pin just below the waist line of the kilt through one layer of material only. This is only for decoration, not to hold the kilt in place. Hang a Sporran, or dec
