Gangs carry out illegal activity and make money doing it. Most of the money comes from: • Dealing illegal drugs • Robbing people and stores • Selling stolen goods • Trading illegal weapons • Forcing people to pay protection money Females vs. Male Activity in Gangs Male teens are more likely to join gangs than females. Females National estimates based on police reports indicate that only about 8% of gang members are female. Female gangs are most likely to be found in smaller communities. They also tend to be younger than male gang members. To join a gang, girls may be forced to perform sexual activites with different gang members or perhaps have to fight other female gang members. Usually they are involved in less delinquent or criminal activity than male gangs. Having said this, female gangs are still a concern, as they are on the rise.
