When were brothels first invented?
Organized prostitution dates back at least 2500 years, to the ancient Greeks. But it wasn’t a financial incentive, it was religious. Temples to the goddess Venus were serviced by women who acted as prostitutes out of religious obligations. Men would pay for their services, but the money went to the temple. There were similar temple prostitutes in Egypt and Babylon. Prostitution is mentioned prominently in the Bible, especially in the books of Isaiah and Ezekiel. The Ancient Greeks started organized prostitution, with several classes of prostitutes. The first brothels were around 600 BCE.
