Why not seek excellence?
Re: Dec. 16 commentary “The real BCS showdown.” The Derrick Z. Jackson column regarding the graduation rate of white and black football players from the University of Texas is a national embarrassment. UT’s regents are running an NFL minor-league franchise and a cash cow, not an educational institution. To pay the coach such an egregious amount of money only serves to heighten and exacerbate the embarrassment. Have the regents no shame? Have they lost sight of the principal mission of a university? I would pay Mack Brown a salary below the Big 12 average until he gets graduation rates to the Big 12 average, and below the national average, until he reaches that benchmark. Why not seek the excellent level of a Boston College or a Northwestern? B.J.
