What is port emulation?
Port emulation makes sure that each attached computer senses that a keyboard and a mouse is directly connected to it, even when the user is switched to a different computer. Some computers, depending primarily on their operating system, require a keyboard and mouse to always be connected. Disconnecting the keyboard or mouse from the computer while it’s running may cause it to hang, or the keyboard and/or mouse may not work once they get reconnected. Port emulation “fools” the computer to constantly recognize a connected keyboard and mouse, thus avoids this problem. Port emulation also allows for more than one computer to boot up at the same time, regardless which port the user is controlling at that time.
Port emulation is important with KVM switches. Port emulation makes sure that the computer still thinks the mouse is connected directly to the computer. Many people know that if you unplug the mouse while the computer is running, the mouse can stop working. If you have a KVM Switch without emulation the computer may think the mouse is unplugged.

Back to Top What is Hot Key Switching? Hot Key Switching allows you to switch between computers without pushing the buttons on the actual switch. It is a simple command sequence that is available in all Connect-Tek KVM switches. Select the following sequence depending on the model of your Connect-Tek KVM switch and remember that all keyboard commands start with an attention sequence of pressing and releasing the left [CTRL] key followed by the command sequence. All command characters are separate keystrokes and must be entered within two seconds of each other. All numbers must be entered using the number across the top of the keyboard. Back to
