What are the differences between International and non-International College Writing Courses?
The most obvious difference is at the College Writing A ? International level. Students in that course meet for four 50-minute periods each week, rather than three. In their extra (Lab) session, they work in small groups with a student lab instructor on things like study skills, reading comprehension, note taking, and oral presentations, among other things, depending on the needs of each small group. Beyond that, the ESL courses mirror the non-International College Writing Courses. There is a slightly greater focus on in-class writing than in most 42.101 and 102 sections. There is also a more specific focus on the types of grammatical and structural errors particular to students with languages other than English. Of course, there is a great range in the approaches of all writing instructors, so our ESL courses may resemble some approaches more than they do others.
