If you toss a silk sweater into the wash with your day-to-day clothing and iron it as you would any other garment, it probably won’t fare well. The delicate silk fibers react badly to harsh laundry detergents and extremely hot or extremely cold water. Additionally, silk is prone to burning, which can make ironing a challenge. In order to preserve your silk sweater, you must follow specific care instructions. If you take the extra time required to properly care for your silk sweater, it will remain as beautiful as it was the day you acquired it. Fill a sink basin with lukewarm water. Add 1 tsp. of mild laundry detergent and mix it into the water. Submerge the silk sweater in the water and soak it for no longer than three or four minutes. Remove the sweater from the water.
