Can Fletcher beat the rap?
While Fletcher may have energized many of the state GOP leadership, it’s clear that the real powerbrokers in the party — the Republican Congressional delegation, led by Sen. Mitch McConnell — have backed away from Fletcher. Fletcher spokesman Brett Hall was asked to resign last week, partly due to his speaking what is most likely the hard truth. Hall told the Associated Press that he believed state GOP chairman Darrell Brock and the state Congressional delegation were in cahoots to get Gov. Fletcher out as a gubernatorial candidate in 2007. There were the usual flurry of denials, and Hall’s boss apologized to Brock over the statement. But I suspect the problem was it was too close to the truth. Can Gov. Fletcher realistically expect to win in 2007?
