The SGMM was initially created by IBM Corporation together with the Global Intelligent Utility Network Coalition and APQC. At the time, the Global Intelligent Utility Network Coalition consisted of Centerpoint Energy, Pepco Holdings Inc, San Diego Gas and Electric (Sempra), and Progress Energy in the United States; Country Energy in Australia; DONG Energy in Denmark; and North Delhi Power & Light in India. APQC is a not-for-profit member-based research organization based in Houston, Texas.
