Ginger is a great herb for adding spice to Asian and Mid-Eastern food dishes. You can grow ginger plants in your home from a simple ginger root purchased at the store and use them for cooking. You can also sprout the plant and transfer it to your garden. The following steps will show you how to grow a ginger plant inside or outside the home. Find and purchase a firm, fresh, healthy ginger root from a health food store or a regular grocery store. Cut a two inch piece of the ginger root. Stick wooden toothpicks in the root on both sides of it so that the toothpicks suspend the ginger root horizontally on the rim of a drinking glass. Fill the drinking glass with water until the root is submerged in the water about a third of the way up. Remove the ginger root from the glass when roots have sprouted and grown about an inch in length.
