How does GTIN work?
The key to make GTIN work is the bar code symbol which represents the unique ID number for each product. This means every product, every variation of this product in terms of size, colour and packaging carries its own GTIN. A bar code symbol is made up of a series of bars and spaces which can be read by scanning machines usually linked to a central computer. When a bar code is scanned, data of the particular product is retrieved at the point of sale display and a detailed invoice is printed, while, at the same time, the transaction is recorded at the back office.
