What is the RCP Biomarker?
Riboflavin, or vitamin B-2, is an essential water-soluble vitamin that is critical for cellular metabolism of protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Riboflavin Carrier Protein (RCP) transports riboflavin to where it’s needed throughout the body. RCP is modulated by estrogen and is a growth and development protein made in the liver. Estrogen is a hormone that is essential for reproduction and the normal growth and development of breast tissues. It plays an important role in childbearing and helps regulate a woman’s menstrual cycles. Estrogen also promotes strong bones and cardiovascular health. However, lifetime exposure to estrogen is associated with an increased risk for breast cancer among women. Because of the relationship between RCP and estrogen, recent research has shown that RCP is an excellent indicator, or biomarker, of both the presence and the stage of the disease.
