What happens to recovered water?
Recovered water is used to achieve ecological results at The Living Murray icon sites (see Q.5). Each icon site has a mangement plan that outlines desired environmental outcomes, and begins to define the volume and timing of environmental water along with structural works needed to achieve these results. Top of page 8. What is the water cap? A limit on diversions was introduced in 1995 to restrict the amount of water extracted from the Murray-Darling Basin’s rivers. Under the Cap, diversions are limited to what would have been diverted under 1993–94 levels of development. The Cap seeks a balance between the significant economic and social benefits obtained from Basin’s water resources with the environmental uses of water in the rivers.
