What does mange look like?

“Hi, I’m Dr. Aimee Beger. I’m a veterinarian, and today, we’re going to be talking briefly about mange in your dog. Mange typically shows up as a skin condition where there is very scaly, dry lesions on your dog’s face; sometimes on their legs. It can be around the eyes, the ears, the muzzle, but you’ll see the scabs, you’ll see scales, and the hair loss. They may or may not be itchy. So, the best way to determine if your dog has mange is to go to your veterinarian, and they will do something called a skin scrape. And they will typically do three to five skin scrapes in the areas where your dog has the hair loss and the scales. There are separate or certain types of mange which are not zoonotic, or transmitted to humans or to other animals, but there are types of mange such as scabies which could be transmitted to you, or to other pets or animals that your, that your dog may come into contact with.
