How Does a Raspberry Grow?
Canes Raspberry plants, called canes, are created by splicing. Although they can be grown from a seed, they do not usually produce good fruit. Raspberry plants are unique in that, although the roots and crowns are perennial, meaning they live for at least a few years, the canes (or supporting structure) themselves only live for two years. Each year the raspberry plant creates new canes from buds that grow underground on horizontal stems. These canes, or suckers, then spend the next season growing larger and producing leaves only. The second season, they produce fruit, while another crop of canes are growing. This means it is always the second year canes that are bearing fruit. Second year canes are easy to identify.
