Position the rototiller at the uppermost edge of the area you want to till. Turn on the rototiller. Begin pushing the rototiller in the direction you want to till. Hold on to the handles tightly, as a rototiller is self-propelled by the motion of its blades. Guide the rototiller over the area in several different directions to completely loosen the soil. Shovel the loosened dirt out, redistributing it to the lower areas. Continue to do this until the area is level.
