What is coppice management?
Coppice is a management system that evidence shows is thousands of years old. When a tree is coppiced it is cut down to the ground but doesn’t die, it then begins to regrow producing a large number of shoots/rods from the stump. These stumps or stools as they are also known, are then cut again on a regular rotation varying between 5 to 25+ years depending on the tree species and the intended use of the cut wood. See image below for an illustration of the coppice cycle.
