How is PRIMOS 25 given to the pig ?
PRIMOS 25 is given directly in the feed of the pig at the start of the growing stage. It is mixed at a rate of between 0.5% and 1.0% in the feed, or between 500g and 1,000g per metric ton of feed. There is no special equipment required to handle and mix the product. PRIMOS 25 is given daily and can be incorporated into pre-starter, starter, grower and finisher feeds. However, if there is an outbreak of a bacterial disease in the farm, veterinary supervision may require that all pigs are given a therapeutic dose of antibiotic for a certain period of time. In this case, it would be preferable to withdraw PRIMOS 25 from the feed as the product is not a therapeutic drug and would thus serve no purpose. After withdrawal of the antibiotic from the feed, PRIMOS 25 may be resumed immediately at a higher rate of 2% in the feed for 7 days, so as to replenish the beneficial micro-organisms and restore the microbial balance in the gut that might have been disrupted by the antibiotic.
