In three predominantly Muslim states in northern Nigeria rumors that a campaign to vaccinate Nigerians against polio is really a plot by the U.S. to spread AIDS and render Muslims infertile is threatening worldwide efforts to eradicate polio. As a result of the roadblocks thrown up by the Muslim communities 15 million African children are at immediate risk and a dozen children in four other West African nations have fallen victim to polio which has all but been eradicated in the Western world.
