When music bands split up…?
Unfortunately you’re all mostly incorrect. The record companies rarely allow bands to keep their publishing rights when they sign into a record deal. Publishing is where the money is in music and once you sign that away it’s over. Publishing is where the “royalties” come from. And remember most bands do not get to keep their publishing rights. Most acts these days make their money by touring. On record sales most bands get “points” and rarely do individual band members get their own points. Most of the bands get one or maybe two points and that’s usually split between the band members. Points are a percentage of record sales and usually do not amount to much, unless you go gold or platinum. If you lose your deal, which is what happens when you break up, you also lose your points since with no band the record contract is in breech and you no longer get a percentage of sales. If the artist had a very strong attorney at the contract negotiations they can get better deals. Also if an artis
