How Does a Realtor License Work?
What is a Realtor? A realtor is a person who is a member of a specific professional association. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) is the largest professional organization for licensed real estate professionals. In 1908 the association was established to preserve property rights and promote a higher code of ethics to those professional members who were in real estate sales or management. Members of the association are called “realtors.” The term “realtor” is a registered trademark, and is not a generic term intended to apply to any licensed real estate sales agent. The proper way to write “realtor ” is by using all capital letters, and the registered trademark: REALTORĀ®. Publications often refrain from using the proper form and simply capitalize the first letter of the word. How You Become a Member Licensed real estate professionals are eligible to apply for membership in the National Association of Realtors. As members they will be allowed to refer to themselves as realtors.
