WHAT DOES CREOLE MEAN?
Aaaah. There are over 30 accepted scholarly definitions of “creole.” So, don’t expect a full answer here in this FAQs section. Suffice to say that the definition in Louisiana has changed over the years. Originally meaning any person born in the “new world” of French and / or Spanish parentage. Moving through a variety of definitions and continuing, as was mentioned, to mean a variety of things to a variety of people – creole can be used to describe a person of African, Haitian, French, Spanish, Native American parentage or a mixture thereof, belonging to a cultural group known as the Creoles in south Louisiana.
