What is known about the cause of Sars?
Scientists in 11 laboratories around the world have been working together since March 17 to try to work out the cause of Sars. They discovered it appeared to be caused by a member of the coronavirus family which has not been seen before in humans. Coronaviruses are thought to be the second most common cause of cold symptoms in humans after rhinoviruses and normally produce only mild symptoms. Investigations are also under way to see if other viruses could be potential causes of Sars. How is it treated? There is no vaccine for Sars and currently antibiotics and antiviral drugs are being used to treat the illness. Peter Hawkey, Professor of Public Health and Clinical Bacteriology at the University of Birmingham, said the UK could learn lessons from Chinese doctors who have treated Sars victims. He said early treatment with steroids and supportive, non-invasive, ventilation appeared to give patients the best prospect of recovery. Is there a test for Sars? There is no test for Sars. Diagno
