How Do You Dye Greek Easter Eggs?
Eggs dyed deep red are a traditional part of Greek and Eastern Orthodox Easter celebrations. Eggs are dyed as a symbol of the Resurrection. They are used in decorations and games and to adorn breads made for the occasion. Traditionally, the eggs are dyed on Holy Saturday, although they may be dyed on Holy Thursday. A game that is often played involves celebrants taking turns trying to crack each other’s eggs by tapping the pointed ends together. The first to crack someone else’s egg wins. Place the skins from 15 yellow onions into a pot. Add 2 tablespoons vinegar and 4 1/2 cups water. Simmer for 30 minutes, covered. Pour the liquid dye through a strainer into a large bowl. Allow the liquid to cool to room temperature. Return the dye to the pot and add 1 dozen eggs. Boil for 12 minutes. Lift an egg from the pot with a slotted spoon to check for color.
