How are Herkimer Diamonds Found?
All of my Herkimer Diamonds are mined by my family and I in the local mine, ACE, in Middleville, NY. I have been mining for about 15 years. I start by removing six to ten feet of solid rock, “Overburden” of dolomitic limestone, before getting to the layer where the large pockets of crystals are. This is all done by hand, setting steel wedges in the seams and hitting them with a twelve pound sledge hammer until the rocks splits off in layers.
