Work Based Learning will allow young people to achieve valuable qualifications at the same time as gaining relevant practical experience in real work situations. On leaving school they can enter WBL either through an Entry to Employment (e2e) programme or an Apprenticeship (depending on what qualifications they gain at school.) There are several different types of WBL: Entry to Employment (e2e), Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships.

At undergraduate level, work based learning (WBL) modules are available as single (20 credit) and double (40 credit) modules at levels 4, 5 and 6. The purpose of WBL is to support effective learning and development, and the application of knowledge and skills within the practice situation. In most cases, you will need to identify a work-place mentor, and develop a work based learning proposal for approval by your line manager and the course team.

WBL is a general name for a number of different types of job-related programmes and qualifications. For example, an Apprenticeship, Entry to Employment (E2E) and National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) could all be described as work based learning.

WBL focuses on the development of knowledge and skill that can be assessed and will need to be verified. It provides a structured and learner-managed approach to role development, but is overtly supported by identified individuals within the University.
