Cytolysis is the destruction and death of cells due to the presence of bacteria in the vagina. This process is observed by the cytotechnologist at the laboratory who is responsible for reviewing Pap smear specimens for potential abnormalities. The presence of extensive cytolysis may result in an unsatisfactory specimen depending on the amount of intact, diagnostic cells that remain.
