XRI is only indirectly related to XNS. Several of the members of the XRI technical committee were involved in developing XNS and saw a need for the creation of an identifier standard that met the criteria discussed in previous questions. The XNS Addressing specification was submitted to the XRI TC and provided much of the inspiration for what became XRI.
