What Are) Proper Rules of Debate (?)
by pyrrho I’m… just… you know, for no particular reason, thinking about this issue of, “What is fair debate?” It’s not because Hubris is armed with nuclear weapons or anything. Ok, that is why. But it is also a general question. Beyond figuring out what goes at Cabal, since Cabal is rooted in the idea that a clear and non-manipulative debate is crucial for political discourse, there is the question of what should go in general. But I think we discover that all debate can be thought of as manipulation if you look harshly enough, all speech is action intending to reach consequence by influencing another person… and that can be called manipulation. So what goes and what doesn’t? I’d love to just ask the question and leave it at that adding my ideas on the subject in comments, but I find a starting point is good, something that can be criticized for being incomplete, ill thought out, and of course, flat out wrong.
