How Do You Make Tostones?
Tostones are usually made from plantains, which are like hard and starchy bananas. They are grown in many tropical regions of the world. Since plantains aren’t readily available in most U.S. markets, this version uses green bananas as a substitute. Follow these steps to make about six servings of tostones. Peel four green bananas. Be sure to use green ones to achieve the similar taste of plantains. Slice the bananas into diagonal pieces about one inch thick. If you aren’t going to fry them right away, place them in water to keep them from turning brown. Heat two cups of vegetable oil in a heavy skillet until hot but not smoking. If you placed the bananas in water, make sure you drain them well on paper towels before you fry them or they will splatter. Fry the bananas one to two minutes per side. Remove them from heat. Smash the bananas with a plate or other flat object until they are about a quarter inch thick. Return them to the pan and fry 30 seconds per side. Remove tostones from th
