When are tax bills mailed?
Real Estate and Personal Property bills are mailed in August of each year. These bills are due on September 1st and are payable up to the interest date listed on your Tax Bill without interest. Registered Motor Vehicle tax bills are mailed monthly based on those vehicles registered with DMV four months prior. Payment for vehicle taxes is due upon receipt of the bill. Interest begins the month following receipt of your tax bill. If taxes remain unpaid for four months after the tax bill is due, a block is placed on your registration renewal with DMV. You will not be able to renew your license plate until the taxes are paid in full. All Mecklenburg County taxpayers are provided ample notice to pay their vehicle tax bill. In addition to other forced collection remedies available to the Tax Collector’s Office such as the garnishment of wages and attachment of bank accounts, foreclosure of real estate and levy (seizure and auction) of personal property which includes registered motor vehicle
Tax bills are mailed out at the end of June of each year. Real Estate and Personal Property greater than $50.00 are due July 1st and January 1st. Tax bills of $50.00 or less have a due date of July 1st. Motor Vehicle taxes are due in one installment with a due date of July 1st. All tax bills are assessed October 1st and taxes from that year’s Grand List are due the following July and the next January. If you have received a real estate bill for property you no longer own please return the tax bill to the tax office or send it to the new owner. If you fail to receive a tax bill call the Tax Collector’s office at 203-270-4320. FAILURE TO RECEIVE A TAX BILL DOES NOT EXEMPT YOU FROM THE TAXES OR INTEREST.
