Who Cares About the Oxford Comma? Friday February 8, 2008 I wasn’t surprised, but I did feel disappointed. It turns out that my students weren’t especially interested in the Oxford comma. No, what they were talking about was “Oxford Comma”–a new song by Vampire Weekend, a rock band from New York City. The group had appeared on Letterman last Friday to plug its new CD. And unfortunately for the sake of this blog, the song “Oxford Comma” has little to do with punctuation. Still, that won’t stop me from blundering on, imagining that you, unlike my students, are more interested in commas than in indie rock music. What Is the Oxford Comma? The Oxford comma is the comma that precedes the conjunction before the final item in a list of three or more items: • This song is dedicated to Moe, Larry, and Curly. • This website is dedicated to Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp, Joe, and Curly Joe. • This book is dedicated to my roommates, Nicole K
