Stalite PermaTill is made of Expanded Slate produced by firing a special slate (compressed volcanic ejecta) through a rotary kiln at temperatures in excess of 2000 F. This creates a durable, lighter, non-toxic, porous granular that is sterile and environmentally inert. As it exits the kiln the material is sterile, inert and ceramic. Some crushing may be performed to facilitate final screening in a screening system. PermaTill has a pH of about 8.5 so it is ideal for the typically acidic native soils in the eastern United States, however because it is inhert it will not change the soil chemistry. PermaTill is a highly porous, low-density material with a bulk specific gravity of approximately 1.45 to 1.60, and a dry/loose unit weight of approximately 48 to 55 pounds per cubic foot, (769 to 881 kg per cubic meter). PermaTill has low absorption, so the pores act as tiny reservoirs storing moisture and any available soluble nutrients which are easily released and available for the roots. It
