Can copy protection kill DVD burner?

We tried to burn a DVD that turned out to have copy protection on it. Since then, the burner has stopped working and causes the computer to freeze up and will not even copy DVDs that we have previously copied. This burner and computer are only a few months old and everything worked perfectly prior to this event. Any suggestions about why this happened and how to fix it? Thanks.
