Are autistic people handicapped?
No, in some ways they are advanced as their brain works in a different way, many autistic people can play the piano amazingly. Wait i needn’t say anything else, look at Albert Einstein, research shows us that he was autistic as his brain worked in a different way so he was able to get around a problem and solve from a different angle! Hope this helps! Hazzer!
Yes, in the sense that Autism is a disability that can make someone’s life difficult and challenging. It is classified as a developmental disability. “Autistic savants” are rare. I have worked in mental health since 1987. The agency I work for has thousands of clients with autism and none of them have any remarkable talents or whatever.
Autism is a wide spectrum. Take aspergers syndrome, for example. This a is a cousin of autism. Persons with this case May lack the ability to understand an express emotion and empathy. They may also lack the ability t do simple, every day tasks, ie. dressing themselves. Persons with this case may also have sensory issues (ie. not being able to walk on sand/grass or wear woollen clothing [just a few basic examples. Look it up if you’re looking to know further details]). However, people with aspergers have great mental capability (just take a look at Rainman). On the other hand, people like Forrest Gump, with another case of autism are mentally handicapped (you may, if you’ve seen the film, remember the scene where it was explained to his mother he was mentally retarded). People with all spectrums of autism find social situations difficult, along with emotion. In short – yes, some people with autism do have learning difficulties. Don’t forget Einstein!
Yes, most people suffering from autism can not function on the same level as a “normal” person. They will recquire support for the entiretly of their lives. However autism is a very broad spectrum and those suffering from less severe cases can live on their own. Autistic people see things differently and are very intelligent with certain things. Like music, science and math.
