What is ketogenic diet?
A ketogenic diet is a very strict, measured meal plan that is high in fats and low in carbohydrates and protein. This diet produces a by-product in the body called ketones. High concentrations of ketones can control seizures. How does a ketogenic diet work? Normally, our bodies are powered by energy from glucose. We get glucose from the foods we eat. Our bodies don’t store large amounts of glucose. We only have about a 24-hour supply. When a child starts a ketogenic diet, he or she doesn’t receive any food for 24 hours. This depletes the supply of glucose. When it’s gone, the child’s body begins to burn stored fat for energy. The ketogenic diet keeps this process of fat for energy going.
