Whip is a term used to describe the effect of centrifugal force exerted on the mandrel at higher speeds which causes it to flex out from the center and cause your turning to become egg shaped. This effect is heightened by over-tightening the keeper nut. To counter this effect you can slow down the turning speed and also refrain from over tightening the keeper nut. It is OK to start with the mandrel tight enough to prevent the blank from spinning on the mandrel. Once the blank has been turned round the nut should be loosened and only hand tightened. This will minimize the whip.
